Vietnam is a country filled with captivating natural beauty and tranquil village life. Its highlands continue to yield new species and team with exotic wildlife. Its islands and beaches are among the finest in all of Southeast Asia, and its cuisine is excellent. Our new Highlights Multisport provides you with the opportunity to experience it all firsthand.

We begin our journey in the country's capital, Hanoi, where we explore its history and cultural exhibits. Experience the old French Quarter by cyclo (bicycle taxis). Then a quick flight takes us to central Vietnam, where we will spend several days exploring the beautiful historic cities of Hue and Hoi An. Your bicycle tour leg also heads into the western mountains for a spectacular ride along the new Ho Chi Minh Highway, with its quiet ethnic villages and broad sweeping landscapes. This winding road follows the old wartime Ho Chi Minh Trail.

The final leg switches gears, leaving the land behind for a cruise by junk through the turquoise waters of UNESCO World Heritage, Ha Long Bay and swaps our bicycles for sea kayaks to explore the many karst limestone islands. Our junk features all the ammenities for comfortable evening accommodations, air conditioned rooms with ensuite facilities. And our sea kayaks allow us access inside the islands paddling through caves to their hidden interiors. It is a jounrey unlike any you have done before.

Itinerary (day-by-day)

Day 1 - Arrive in Hanoi and transfer to our hotel in the old French Quarter. The rest day at your leisure.

Day 2 - We explore Hanoi by van, foot and cyclo (a pedal powered taxi). Among our stops is the Museum of Ethnology, with its informative displays about Vietnam's history, culture and ethnic minorities. You will roll through the historic streets of the French Quarter via cyclo and enjoy a traditional Vietnamese water puppet show at dinner.

Vietnam bicycle tours and ridesDay 3 - This morning we will take the early flight to Hue, one of the most beautiful cities in Vietnam. After getting the bikes ready, we will pedal out to visit the Imperial Citadel ruins, then loop out through the back streets to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda and Ming Manh mausoleums. 19 mi / 30 km

Day 4 - We'll shuttle a bit to avoid a busy stretch of highway, then embark on a delightful ride along backroads following the coast. A short ferry ride brings us to Hwy 1, where we tackle a few short climbs before reaching Lang Co beach and a seafood lunch. Afternoon will find us pedaling over Hai Van Pass (Pass of the Ocean Clouds), then on to our overnight stop in historic Hoi An. You will enjoy dinner at our favorite restaurant overlooking the river in Hoi An. 50 mi / 80 km

Day 5 - Another quick shuttle takes us away from busy Hwy 1 and into the foothills of western Vietnam. Re-mounting our bikes in Thanh My, we will ride the spectacular Ho Chi Minh Highway north through lush forests, rolling hills and picturesque vistas. Riders can pedal as much or as little as they wish today, but we guarantee it will be worth your while to enjoy as much as you can. We relax tonight in tiny Lao Bao near the Laotian border. 43 mi / 70 km

Day 6 - Descending out of the mountains, we eventually rejoin Hwy 1, but quickly turn off to pedal a quiet sideroad along the coast to Thuan An. Evening will find us back in Hue. 60 mi / 97 km

Vietnam Bike tours and ridesDay 7 - We fly back to Hanoi bright and early, then transfer by van to Halong city. Boarding a private junk, we will spend the next two days cruising and sea kayaking among the limestone islands that rise from the emerald green waters of Ha Long Bay. Our junk serves as our hotel and restaurant, with private air conditioned cabins and ensuite facilities. In the afternoon we will enjoy sea kayaking in Bai Tu Long Bay and visits to the fishing port of Ca Bau.

Day 8 - After breakfast, explore desolate Quan Lan Island with its stunning deserted sandy beaches. Quan Lan has lots of history dating back to the Mongols. Optional cycling on a flat single lane country road to the northern village on the island, Minh Chau. In the afternoon sea kayak off the islands close to Quan Lan. Kayak to Jumping Monkey, Cong Dong and Cong Tay Islands.

Day 9 - In the morning, cruise to Trong and Trinh Nu caves. Paddle for three hours among the karst scenery near to the caves. After lunch cruise further through the bay stopping to kayak inside Luon cave (tunnel cave). In the early evening we return to shore and transfer back to Hanoi.
