Home to numerous ethnic tribal groups, Vietnam's northeastern mountains offers some of the country's most dramatic scenery and spectacular cycling. Our journey through the area takes in mountain trails, lush valleys, cascading waterfalls, hot springs, village of stilt houses and colorful markets. Explore Hanoi's ancient quarter and discover the old French hill station of Sapa, perched in the cool hills.

Our journey begins in Hanoi where we work off the jetlag by enjoying some walking tours through the ancient streets and enighborhoods of the city, exploring old temples and colonial avenue. Transfering to the foothills to our delightful lodge at Mai Chau, we warm up with some easy riding and then its off to the mountains. The cycling on this trip is not long, but it is challenging ... plenty of climbing, followed by dramatic descents, rolling along ridgelines and through lush valley dotted with Montagnard villages (French name for the mountain tribes of Vietnam). Pedal past tea plantations and rice paddies, watching the buffalo til the fields and the villagers going about their daily live.

We take a day off in picturesque Sapa, to explore the markets or simply stroll to quiet streets. It was a favorite getaway spot for the colonial French settlers, who enjoyed its cool air and beautiful scenery. Several more days of challenging yet invigorating cycling fill out the balance of our trip. These rides of some of the best, mixing spectacular landscapes with exciting bicycling routes. Enjoy evenings in simple, yet clean hotels in the country, complimented by deluxe accommodations in Hanoi, Sapa and Mai Chau. Its a journey to remember for a lifetime to come.

There is one steep hill climb of approx 3km, which cruises down into a superb valley with Lu villages of Dong Pau 1 and Dong Pau 2 to explore, the Lu women are famous for their black lacquer teeth. The cycling is not technical, and is a mix of hard pack gravel and clay. Enjoy hot soup and sandwiches in one of the local village houses. Vietnam cycling holidays, tours and ridesDay 10 - The quiet, remote ride, perhaps the hardest of the trip so far and you should only attempt it if you are feeling up for a challenge! It is impossible to count the number of hill climbs and descents! The road is rough all the way and there are few (if any) flat stretches. It is however quite remote and stunningly beautiful. The children are frightened of foreigners, so care must be taken when riding by or approaching children en route. It is advisable to wear riding pants below the knees – bearing skin on this ride is definitely a cultural no no. This is possibly the most outstanding ride of the tour so far, but very very challenging. Overnight in Dien Bien Phu. 36 mi / 60 km

Day 11 - Dien Bien Phu is situated almost at the border with Laos on an immense gorge 20 km long and 3 km wide. It is in Dien Bien Phu where Ho Chi Minh led his People’s Liberation Army to a bloody but decisive victory over the French colonizers on May 7, 1954 that brought French colonial rule to an end. After packing the bikes ready for the flight to Hanoi, spend the morning exploring the historical sites of Dien Bien Phu, taking in the informative museum and other relics from the French wars with Vietnam. Late morning flight to Hanoi and transfer into town. In the evening, we celebrate our adventure ride at one of Hanoi’s best restaurants. Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 12 - You are at your leisure, until it is time to transfer to airport for your outbound flight.
